What Students should do at each age to progress in career process?

A surprising question that still comes up for us as counsellors is – Do we need career counselling?

In today’s rapidly changing world, there should be no doubt that a single person or parent cannot remain on top of the career possibilities and trends. This is a job that is better left to specailists. But as parents and students you should try to take advantage of the knowledge of specialists (career counselors) and try to chart out the best possible path for yoruselves.

With the impact of globalization, AI and automation in the workplace, and the increasingly VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) environment, career guidance is more crucial than ever. Yet, what often gets overlooked in these discussions is the ideal time for students to embark on this essential journey.

The next question that comes up is when should we start?

Some think that starting too early gives them an unfair advantage but this is not true as it can create unnecessary stress and cause burn out before one reaches the right time. Starting too late will of course give you a big disadvantage.

We believe that grade 8 is the right time to have conversations about career. Let us go grade by grade and see what would be the steps at each drade.

1. Grade 8 – Identifying Your Own Strengths

Here is what you should do in Grade 8

  • Take Psychometric Tests: These tests will help assess your learning style, personality, and intelligence type, providing insights into your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Get involved in extra-curricular activities: Join clubs, sports teams, or volunteer programs to develop life skills and create a well-rounded profile that stands out.
  • Reflect on your passions and hobbies: Consider what activities make you happy and how they might translate into potential career paths.
  • Consult with a career counselor for guidance on self-discovery and understanding your unique strengths and weaknesses

“Grade 8 is the time to discover your strengths and ignite your passions by diving into a world of learning, exploration, and self-discovery.”

Rekha Pillai

2. Grade 9 – Explore Prospective Careers

Here is what you should be doing in Grade 9

  • Conduct in-depth research: Use online resources, books, and articles to learn about various careers and industries that align with your interests and strengths.
  • Attend career fairs and workshops: Gain exposure to different fields by participating in events that showcase various professions.
  • Network with professionals: Speak with family members, teachers, or neighbors about their careers to get firsthand insights into different fields.
  • •Engage in in-person or group counseling sessions to align student and parent expectations, helping to make sense of the suggested career paths

“Expand your horizons and uncover the possibilities by engaging in meaningful conversations, attending career events, and researching various fields.”

3. Grade 10 – Selecting the Right Streams and Subjects

Here is what you should do in Grade 10

  • Assess your academic performance and determine the necessary improvements to pursue the desired stream, keeping in mind the role of marks in stream selection
  • Speak with a career counselor for guidance on stream selection and its impact on future career options, making an informed decision before board exams
  • Prepare for board exams while keeping future career goals in mind, allowing you to focus on the areas that need improvement

“Lay the foundation for your future by making informed decisions on your academic path, keeping in mind both your short-term and long-term goals.”

Rekha Pillai

4. Grade 11 – Shortlisting Course, College, and Career:

• Create a list of potential courses, colleges, cities, and countries to pursue your career goals, understanding that career guidance is even more important post stream selection

• Research college admission processes, requirements for entrance exams, and relevant deadlines

• Continue working with a career counselor to refine your career aspirations, make real choices, and develop a plan based on your chosen stream

“Refine your focus by thoroughly examining courses, colleges, and career options to determine the best route for your unique aspirations.”

5. Grade 12 – Preparing for Take off

• Update your resume and profile, highlighting your achievements, activities, and accomplishments throughout your academic journey

• Apply to colleges, complete entrance exams, and manage deadlines with the help of a career guidance system, ensuring a cohesive and hassle-free process

• Stay organized and informed with regular reminders and updates from your career counselor to avoid missing deadlines, ensuring you don’t miss out on any opportunities

“As you prepare for take-off, remember that diligence, organization, and a clear vision will be the keys to unlocking the door to your dream career.”

Rekha Pillai, CEO

By following this comprehensive plan from Grade 8 to 12, students will be well-prepared to make informed decisions about their education and future careers. The key is to stay proactive, engaged, and open to new experiences throughout the journey.
